Compilation

From about 1987 to 1994 I played in a number of bands around Dayton, Ohio such as THE OXYMORONS, PLANET ED, and COLAVISION. Shame on you if you've never heard of any of those bands. We were big, I tell ya, BIG... B-I-G. I'm a fucking unappreciated genius in my own time, and it's your damn fault if you don't know who I am, got it?

Anyway, in that time, I collected a fair library of punk and indie rock produced by Dayton bands. My good friend Greg (aka Grog, OXYMORONS' bass player) collected even more. A few months ago, after Greg graciously loaned me a couple of boxes of tapes, I started transferring his and my material from its time-ravaged vinyl and cassette analogs to the more enduring digital form (just as I imagine thousands of other has-beens in their mid-30s have done across America in a vain attempt to preserve the dubious glory of their misspent 20s). "I Remember Dayton (Punk & Indie Rock)" will share some of this great music--and perhaps a story or two.

Some of the bands to be featured in future episodes include COLAVISION, DOBIE WILLIS, FLESHBATS, FRANKENSTEIN'S KIND, HANG'N PRIDE, HEIKE, THE KILLJOYS, NICK KIZIRNIS, LIQUID DRAINO, NOSTROMO, THE OBVIOUS, THE OXYMORONS, PLANET ED, PLEASURES PALE, THE PURE PLASTIC TREE, ROCK WOLF, SOURBELLY, GREGG SPENCE, THAT HOPE, TOOBA BLOOZE, THE UNDERDOGS, U.S. MODS, WALLAROO SOUTH, THE WIZBANGS, and more.

Sorry, no BREEDERS, TOXIC REASONS, or BRAINIAC. Why? Well, THE BREEDERS aren't really a Dayton band (sue me--it's true, goddammit!), and I don't have anything by the other two that you couldn't get somewhere else (though THE WIZBANGS features members of BRAINIAC).

For most artists, I'll be sharing a full-length release of one type or another, but today we share a sampling of what's to come. Dig...

D'ya know, I still sing "Half" when I'm feeling drunk and romantic.

This is a very cool thing, Jones. Very cool.
